The 5 Rinas/Debts
In Sanatana Dharma, the Five Rinas/debts are the inherent spiritual obligations that every individual is born with.
Here is a breakdown of the five Rinas:
1. Deva Rin (Debt to the Deities): This is the debt of gratitude to the divine forces that provide the fundamental elements for life, such as air, light, and sustenance. It is repaid through worship, prayer, and performing sacrifices or rituals to honor God.
2. Pitri Rin (Debt to Ancestors/Parents): This debt is owed to one’s parents and ancestors for
giving birth and propagating the lineage. It is repaid by upholding family values, continuing pure customs, performing rituals for ancestors, and carrying forward their legacy.
3. Rishi Rin (Debt to Sages/Teachers): This refers to the debt to the ancient sages, saints, and teachers who have generated and shared profound knowledge. It is discharged by learning from their teachings, propagating that wisdom, and honoring and patronizing learning.
4. Manushya Rin (Debt to Society/Humanity): Every person is indebted to the society with which they interact. This debt is repaid by treating others with respect, helping fellow humans, and engaging in acts of service to the broader community.
5. Bhuta Rin (Debt to Nature/Environment): This is the debt to the natural world, including plants, animals, and the entire environment. It is fulfilled by showing respect for all living beings, practicing kindness, and performing actions that are beneficial to the earth.
Let’s settle one of the 5 Rinas in Pitru Paksha days by doing rituals like Tarpan.
One should avoid new ventures, tamasik lifestyle, auspicious events, and instead focus on feeding the needy and animals, maintaining a pure lifestyle, donating to charities, and showing respect to elders to bring peace to the departed souls.
Sponsorship starts at $75 – your contribution will serve both your ancestors and the temple community.
